One Year Masters in Health and Physical Education

The Master of Science (MS) in Health Education and Behavior (HEB) is designed for students seeking either an advanced practitioners degree, a career in healthcare or are interested in research. Upon completion of the MS graduate program curriculum requirements, students are eligible to register and sit for the national Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES®) examination administered by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. The MS Degree includes Thesis, Non-Thesis and Project In Lieu of Thesis options.

A distinctive feature of this option allows students to choose a minimum of 15 credits of HSC elective coursework that matches their personal and professional interests, and allows them to plan a program that achieves their goals. The degree prepares health education specialists to work in local, state, and federal health agencies, voluntary health organizations, patient care settings, and private industry. The degree also can assist students seeking a competitive edge when applying to graduate and professional schools, particularly in the health professions. Full-time students can complete this M.S. option in one year.

The 30-credit, Non-Thesis Pre-Professional Health Science Track Option in the Master of Science (M.S.) in Health Education and Behavior degree program is designed for students seeking a career in health care. This degree track prepares students who are interested in graduate studies in the health sciences and or pursing health professional training. Full-time students can complete this M.S. option in one year.

The 36-credit, Thesis and the 36-credit, Project In Lieu Of Thesis options in the Master of Science in Health Education and Behavior degree program are designed for students interested in improving their research skills through conducting evaluation projects and empirical studies, as well as pursuing advanced graduate study, particularly the doctoral degree. Students typically complete these options in four semesters.

The 30-credit, Non-Thesis Master degree in Health Education and Behavior is also available online.

The MS in Health Professions Education program offers both fully remote and face-to-face programs designed for students who are interested in building their teaching and educational skills in a medical, biomedical, or health professions field.

Design and implement innovative curricula and educational programs for learners within the health professions.

Demonstrate skills in a variety of classroom-based and clinical teaching methods and apply these to actively engage and support learners in a range of health professions settings.

Prepare, deliver, and analyze evaluations of health professions students and educational programs.

Provide mentorship and leadership for both educational programs and initiatives within the health professions.

Health and Physical Education will prepare students to emerge as leaders in education in their health professions field. Students will be capable of preparing novel health professions curricula specific to local needs, including competency-based goals and objectives, innovative and proven teaching methods, and a variety of evaluations of measurable and meaningful learning outcomes. Graduates will also be capable of offering local expertise and mentorship in both classroom and clinical teaching.

The program is a 32-credit Master of Science degree that includes a 16-credit certificate program. Students still in pursuit of a terminal health professions degree will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

While the selection of courses toward the degree remains the same, students have the option of an in-person versus remote version with different sections for all core GMS courses.

The Master of Education (MEd) in Health Education and Promotion is a unique program offering the flexibility to choose between three concentration areas:.

Option for students seeking job opportunities as a health education specialist. leads to endorsement for New Hampshire certification as a K-12 Health Education teacher. Can be completed entirely online.

Each concentration has specific enrollment requirements, and some require specific majors or prerequisites courses. Each program is different in its delivery of online, hybrid, face-to-face, intensive weekends, or in-class sessions. The nine credits of core MEd courses may be taken totally online or in a hybrid format.

The core education courses are offered year-round, and the required health education courses are offered primarily as weekend and hybrid courses. A limited number of courses will be offered during the fall terms. Content classes are offered on a rotating basis. This schedule allows students to complete their degree in two or three years on a part-time basis. Full-time students may be able to complete the requirements in less time.

Our fully online program can be completed in one year of full-time study or two to five years of part-time enrollment. Our program is ideal for working adults or those interested in advancing their careers without wanting to travel or have on-campus requirements. This is not an initial licensure program. Applicants must have a teaching license to complete this program.

All of your courses are online, so you can structure the program to fit your schedule. If you're seeking professional development you may take classes at your own pace and transfer up to nine credits into the program if you wish to program at a later date.

Our program offers coursework that may be used to satisfy Virginia licensure requirements for teachers provisionally licensed in Health and Physical Education.

Once officially licensed, non degree students can apply up to 9 Longwood HPE credits into the master program. Students can also transfer in up to 6 credits of aligned coursework that satisfy program requirements (completed courses from another institution within the last 5 years).

To be classified as a full-time graduate student, one must be enrolled in at least 9 total units over the span of a term (Fall, Spring, or Summer). Within each term, students take courses during two, eight-week sessions. For example, a full-time student may take 6 units during the eight-week Fall I session and 3 units during the eight-week Fall II session, for a total of 9 units over the term. Half-time students take at least 3-6 units every eight-week session. Most candidates are working adults and do not take classes full time. Academic advising will help you determine the ideal course load for your schedule.

All courses are offered in accelerated eight-week sessions in fall, spring, and summer.

The average class size in this program ranges is 15 students.

A capstone project with defense is required. Unique to this capstone course, the student will engage in a 360-degree investigative process that includes interviews observations with experts in the field reviews of current literature exploration of multiple sides of an issue and points of view and, development of a culminating action plan that allows the student to offer implications, conclusions, and next steps as a professional in the field.

The physical education degree can potentially be finished in one year. However, it can take longer therefore, academic advising is highly recommended and especially helpful in determining what is suitable for the individual based on personal schedule and content of the current class.
