One Year Masters in Human Services

The M.A. in Human Services (HMS) will prepare you for management and leadership positions in the growing human and social services fields. You will develop an appreciation of contemporary and historic human characteristics, issues, and problems as the foundation for designing, delivering, and evaluating interventions and services to improve the quality of life for all people.

The core courses teach the skills and concepts that all human services professionals need.

Since 2011, the Sport Management Masters program has been fully online. In 2021, the program became the first 30-credit hour masters program at Indiana State University, allowing students to finish the program in as little as 12 months. Most students complete the degree within five semesters (including summer term) or less.

Human Services is designed to prepare students in various areas of sport management such as public relations, sport marketing, finance, leadership, facility management, and sport law. Prior to the culminating experience, the nine classes offered are 5 to 8-week classes. Students are able to take classes that fit their schedule. Culminating Experience) allows the student to build off their course work through an internship, research project, or a student-led semester long project.

This workshop will address the unique issues encountered during the provision of social services and therapy. The Medical Interpreter training course prepares you to work in hospitals, medical offices and in any healthcare environment where a Spanish interpreter is needed. Nestor Wagner is a certified Court and Medical Interpreter who has been teaching interpreting courses since 1990. He has the highest pass rate of certified court interpreters in the nation. He has published several books in the interpreting community. Mr. Wagner is involved in the examination process for Immigration Interpreters and Analytical Linguists. He participates as a speaker in national and international conferences on Criminal, Civil, and Immigration Court terminology, advanced interpreting skills, and localization in the transfer of legal and non-legal terminology. Mr. Wagner holds a Master degree from the University of Washington.

Ms. Txabarriaga has over 20 years of experience in language services and international business management ranging from independent consulting to senior executive positions, and business ownership. Ms. Txabarriaga has several degrees, including a master degree from Monterey Institute of International Studies, has earned many certificates, and speaks five languages fluently. Ms. Txabarriaga is also a NASBITE-Certified Global Business Professional and an accomplished writer and public speaker.

Graduate student Hajira Baig created a research project to better understand mental health needs and coping strategies in an effort to better assist people in need and reduce stigma surrounding mental illness in rural Pakistan.

This research work has led to development of several new and effective programs which are provided by IAR staff to our community partners and schools. Researchers at the IAR are also dedicated to training the next generation of researchers and practitioners through advanced academic, research, and clinical and community-based experiences.

An empirically-validated summer psychosocial program for 7-12 year old children held at the IAR at Canisius.

Grants are a large source of for both research and clinical programming. The following is a sample of current and prior funding used to conduct studies and provide clinical services involving autistic individuals. The Lamar University Dietetic Internship (DI) Program offers an accredited 12-month (August to August) program for up to 10 students. The program began in 1995 with a commitment to provide an excellent, evidence-based supervised practice experience to all dietetic interns. The Dietetic Internship Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).

The program emphasizes nutrition education and counseling and requires you to complete a minimum of 1000 hours (32 weeks) in supervised practice experiences within the Southeast Texas region along with the MS in Nutrition degree at Lamar University. The MS in Nutrition program completion with degree conferment is required starting in the 2023-2024 academic year. The LU DI program no longer offers a DI only option. Upon satisfactory completion of the internship and the master program requirements, you become eligible to take the registration exam, and become an active member of the Academy of Nutrition Dietetics.

Additionally, once you are a qualified RDN, you are eligible to apply to become a Texas Licensed Dietitian. Regulations and requirements may vary from state-to-state information is available here.

In addition, CDR requires that individuals complete coursework and supervised practice in program(s) accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Graduates who successfully complete the ACEND-accredited dietetic internship program at Lamar University are eligible to apply to take the CDR credentialing exam to become an RDN.
