Established in 1974 as the first program of its kind, the Master of Arts in Teaching in Museum Education leads the way for museums, and other cultural and natural heritage sites, to nurture a humane and just society. The program prepares leaders who facilitate distinctive learning opportunities for participants to engage powerfully with their lives, their communities, and the world.

Museums as Institutions II: Field Placement and Seminar (taken for 6 credits) .

EDUC 6704: Field Placement and Seminar (taken for 6 credits in the first year of the program) Supervised placement in local educational institutions. On-campus seminar focuses on human development and learning theory. Placement requires a 16 hour per week commitment.

EDUC 6705: Field Placement and Seminar (taken for 6 credits in the first year of the program) Supervised placement in area museums and related organizations where students carry out projects in cooperation with the site. On-campus seminar includes presentations by leading practitioners. Placement requires a commitment of 32 hours per week. Restricted to museum education students. Prerequisites: EDUC 6701, 6702, 6703 and 6704.

I chose this program because it has blazed the trail of professionalizing the field of museum education as evidenced by the strength, reach, and impact of its extensive alumni network. It provided a solid foundation in museological and educational theories combined with practical, real-world experience working in museums and other educational organizations. The University of Denver offers a Master's in Art History with a Museum Studies Concentration graduate program. Students  will study with curators and conservators from the region's art institutions as well as obtain a master's degree in art history. Students  can obtain experience handling art, hanging shows, and curating exhibits in our Vicki Myhren Gallery and Madden Museum while studying. Museum studies students also do an individually customised internship in a regional or national art institution, providing hands-on experience and networking opportunities.

New students are admitted for the fall semester only. Applications are considered on a rolling basis until the class is filled. Students wishing to be considered for a graduate assistantship, which is the principle form of financial aid in the department, should have their applications complete by February 15. The admissions committee looks carefully at academic credentials, but is also interested in previous experiences that show familiarity with and aptitude for museums and the museum profession. Professional experience may include summer internships or volunteer assignments in a museum or related cultural institution it does not have to be a full-time position. If you lack such experience in a museum, we suggest you take some time to gain such experience before submitting an application to the program.

Effective August 2022, completion of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional for applicants to the master degree in museum studies.

The Western Illinois University Master Certificate program in Museum Studies focusses on professional preparation and requires an internship rather than a thesis as the exit option for graduation. Admission to the program does not require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and instead is based on grade point average, current resume, letters of recommendation, and an essay statement of academic and professional interest.

Western Illinois University offers instate tuition for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, and Wisconsin residents. The Museum Studies Master program requires 34 semester hours, and the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate program requires 18 semester hours. A majority of Master seeking students complete the Master degree in 18 months.

The Museum Studies Program offers several semester-long assistantships that provide a full tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. Students receiving an assistantship are required to work 13 hours a week doing a variety of administrative and or research tasks.
