CHEM 1020: Organic Chemistry I Lecture CHEM 1020L: Organic Chemistry I Lab.
This course is a Carbonyl First approach to organic chemistry. This course will focus on the structure and properties of organic compounds, carbonyl reactions (needed for biochemistry), and spectroscopy.
CHEM 1020: Organic Chemistry I Lecture Course .
CHEM 1020 is a three-credit, lecture only, online organic chemistry course. This course is designed to give the student, interested in the health professions, an introduction to structure, reactivity, and analysis of organic molecules. Students will be introduced to organic structures (functional groups, nomenclature, stereochemistry and conformations) and then learn carbonyl reactions (nucleophilic additions to ketones aldehydes and nucleophilic substitution to acid derivatives). The students then apply these topics to biochemical settings. Finally, the course ends with an introduction to spectroscopic analysis. This course is a Carbonyl First approach to organic chemistry. This course will focus on the structure and properties of organic compounds, carbonyl reactions (needed for biochemistry), and spectroscopy. In addition, this course will lay the groundwork for advanced understanding of the chemical reactivity topics covered in Organic Chemistry II.
CHEM 1020L: Organic Chemistry I Lab Course .
CHEM 1020L is a one-credit, lab only, online organic chemistry course. This lab course is designed at a level to provide an introductory-level college organic chemistry course for health science majors. This course is a Carbonyl First approach to organic chemistry. This course will focus on the structure and properties of organic compounds, carbonyl reactions (needed for biochemistry), and spectroscopy. The labs are thus for pre-medical, dental, PA, DPT, pharmacy, dietetics, and graduate nutrition students. Topics include separation and purification techniques and an introduction to spectroscopy. This course will introduce the student to important laboratory techniques covered on most professional entrance exams.
Organic Chemistry I Lecture or Lab Course Prerequisites.
Two semesters of college-level general chemistry (CHEM 1010 CHEM 1011).
Please note these prerequisites are highly suggested and support course preparedness and success. We recommend having completed the listed prerequisites before enrolling and within the past seven years.
All exams are taken online. Major exams are required to be proctored online through ProctorU. Please note exams must also be proctored with the UNE-approved external webcam.
SPHP courses require the use of the UNE-approved external webcam for all proctored exams. The UNE-approved whiteboard is optional dependent on the course. (Webcam Whiteboard Ordering Information).
All lab materials are purchased or accessed through your course. A subscription to Labflow will be required for assignments. A join code access link is available upon enrollment in the course.
Courses Typically Begin Every Two to Three Weeks.
Working at the pace typical for a four-semester hour course, the average student will complete this online course in approximately 16 weeks. Many students have elected an online course for the sake of flexibility. Since the course is self-paced, you may be able to complete the course in less than 16 weeks.
You may enroll for a course at any time through our self-service registration portal. Payment is needed in full at the time of registration.
Your official start date is the date that the course opens and you will have 16 weeks from that date to complete your course.

One of the concepts we stress when instructing classes in either the traditional or online MBA program is the concept of sustainability. The 3 Ps (People, Planet, and Profit) are the fundamental building blocks toward a sustainable organization but on that in future posts. Tied closely to sustainability is the need to exploit the practice of Green Chemistry. Now that is quite a mouthful!
Many of our commercial industries either produce or consume various products that are either derived from fossil fuels or synthesized using hazardous substances. This results in by products that must be handled as hazardous wastes requiring some form of treatment. Business leaders must take these issues into consideration when evaluating total product life cycle costs. Critical analysis must be deployed to capture total costs of ownership for these products rather than simply using general accounting principles. Taking a proactive approach to mitigate future impact of the 3Ps should be a critical component of the business strategy. This means that affected industries can use Green Chemistry as a tool to drive competitive advantage.
