The program begins with a 5 day in person residency in June, continues with a sequence of online courses, and then culminates with a study teaching experience. After completing the program, you are eligible to obtain an Indiana teaching license. This process can be completed in as little as 18 months for elementary education and 12 months for secondary education.

This program can be completed by anyone living in the United States. Indiana has reciprocal teacher licensure agreements with most states in the U.S., meaning your Indiana teaching license can be easily transferred to your state of residence. In this course, candidates will survey the career opportunities of education and discover the role the teacher serves in relation to diverse student populations, parents caregivers, school, and community along with the principles and theories of educational psychology.

Candidates develop a repertoire of teaching methods and strategies, techniques and skills for managing a classroom, constructing and analyzing tests and evaluation tools for classroom teachers, and develop a working knowledge of responsive instruction by applying differentiation strategies and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.

The 16-week seminar is paired with a supervised, 5-week, scaffolded application of methods through clinical practice in a K-6 school setting. This is an in person teaching experience that also includes an online seminar component as a well as a Teacher Work Sample project. During student teaching, the candidate is supported by a college supervisor and classroom supervisor.

No formal field experience is required. Some of our courses do require you to teach or interact with a child or small group, but you are able to do this around your schedule. Each assignment requiring the candidate to teach or interact with children includes an option for those already in a school setting and those who are not in a school setting. The Master of Arts in Teaching Special Education (MAT-SPED) Elementary is a licensure program designed for paraeducators. It is a two year, 36-hour, online program that begins each summer. Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree in a non-teaching area and at least one year experience working as a paraeducator. The program allows teacher candidates to earn a Kansas teaching license in High Incidence, Special Education, Grades K-6. During the course of the program, candidates must be employed as full time paraeducators in accredited Kansas schools, working with students in Grades K-6 who have high incidence learning needs or can be hired by a school district as the Teacher of Record using the Limited Apprentice License.

This introductory course provides opportunities for participants to develop knowledge and understanding of leadership principles and the process of continuous improvement as it relates to the roles and responsibilities of elementary mathematics specialists.

EDCI 62624: Mathematical Leadership for Elementary Mathematics Specialists: Influencing and Facilitating Improvement.

This second leadership course in the EMS program focuses on research and practice related to teamwork, interaction, communication, conflict resolution, and leadership in K-5 schools. Candidates will examine strategies for influencing and facilitating school district improvement (e.g., mentoring and observing colleagues, conducting professional development, and making data-informed decisions to improve student learning) collaborating with colleagues and administration. This practicum course serves as a capstone for the Masters in Elementary Mathematics Program. Pre-requisites: 4 out of the 5 of the following courses MATH 17623, MATH 17625, MATH 17626, MATH 17627, and MATH 17628.

This course will focus on the development of skills related to finding, evaluating, analyzing, prioritizing and integrating data sources for the improvement of student learning. Students will retrieve data, develop an action plan for improvement, and create a project demonstrating proficiency in data literacy.
