One Year Online Masters in Public Health

The Master’s in Public Health (MPH) degree program in the Department of Public Health Sciences is a 43-credit online/on-campus program accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH). The MPH program has a long-standing tradition of training a diverse range of public health and health professionals in the skills needed to identify, prevent and solve community health problems.

This MPH Program has two formats: the MPH Online format and the MPH Online/On-Campus Hybrid format. Both formats can be delivered entirely online and do not require any on-campus presence. Because both MPH program formats can be completed entirely online (i.e., there are no on-campus requirements in either format), international students are not eligible to obtain a visa for the MPH program of study, regardless of format.

The MPH Online Program format is delivered completely online and does not require any on-campus presence. The MPH Online program is ideal for international students, because it can be completed entirely remotely, with no required on-campus component.

The MPH Online/On-Campus Hybrid Program format can also be delivered completely online and does not require any on-campus presence. However, students in the MPH Online/On-Campus Hybrid program format will have an additional option for their Integrated Learning Experience (i.e., capstone) paper that includes on-campus (i.e., in-person) requirements, and they may also choose their two program elective courses from among our on-campus (i.e., in-person) elective course options, if they wish.

Students who do not wish to take advantage of our on-campus (i.e. in-person) offerings and instead wish to complete their entire MPH program of study entirely online should consider applying to our MPH Online Program format.

While part-time online students have four years to complete the degree requirements, students typically earn the degree in two-three years by taking, on average, one-three courses per term. Some students may complete the degree in as little time as one year utilizing full-time student status. Part-time students have incredible flexibility in designing and planning their curriculum with many choices of courses as well as modalities of instruction (online or onsite in 8-week terms or intensive institute courses).

Our part-time online MPH Program can be taken completely online or also include onsite courses.

The Online Only option is for students who wish to take all of their courses online and not travel to Balti .

The Online Plus option (minimum onsite requirement of 4 credits) is for students who wish to take some face-to-face onsite courses.

F-1 I-20s cannot be issued for instruction during an 8-week term. However, a part-time student may transfer to the full-time program to complete their remaining requirements onsite as a full-time student.

Students may complete their MPH program fully online, fully onsite or via a combination of online and onsite courses. Online courses with pre-recorded lectures, discussion boards, and live chats allow part-time students to arrange their study around their personal schedules. Intensive onsite institute courses also provide opportunities for onsite networking and interactions.

The scope of the public health online course is on the U.S. healthcare system and the multiple dimensions of healthcare cost and payment, with an emphasis on how payment schemes influence provider behavior and performance, and population outcomes. This course introduces students to the use of survey methods in public health and healthcare. This course provides students with a basic foundation of biostatistics and its role in public health and health sciences. The course covers the statistical principles that govern the analysis of data in public health and health sciences. Included in this course are exploratory data analysis, probability theory, confidence interval testing, hypotheses testing, power and sample size determination, and multivariable methods.

This course provides the student with a rigorous introduction to the micro and macroeconomic theory to understand the healthcare landscape both from a financing and policy perspective. Topics explored include market behavior demand theory production and cost theory decision-making in competitive and non-competitive markets, Gross Domestic Product determination unemployment and inflation and fiscal and monetary policy.

This course is a required, foundational course. It acquaints the student with the history of public health, the structure of the public health system, the ten essentials services, and the core knowledge areas in order to gain an understanding of the complex factors impacting health behaviors in the community. This course is designed to introduce the students to the range of public health professions and to motivate their interests in public health courses. The course also will introduce the development of a professional portfolio.

The course introduces students to the basics of research design and methodology in public health. It provides coverage of quantitative and qualitative methods. Topics include: development of a hypothesis, sampling, data collection and structure, survey design and administration, and analytic interpretation. In public health, carefully designed research studies and their results are critical in the development of evidence-based policies, programs, and interventions. Students apply their knowledge acquired in the course by developing a research proposal. Research skills are in high demand by public health employers.

This course explores the biological basis of disease. It focuses on the impact of diseases on public health decision-making. The pathogenesis of various disease conditions are covered and how such pathogenesis could either be prevented or interrupted.

The course provides a foundation in the application of social and behavioral sciences to public health. Social and behavior theories are examined in terms of understanding health-related behavior and applying these theories to health promotion. The course covers existing social inequalities in health status related to race, social class and gender and the critical intersection between social risk factors, behavioral risk factors and the development and implementation of public health interventions.

This course offers students an of basic concepts in environmental sciences, an understanding of the health impact of various environmental exposures, and the public health approach to controlling and eliminating environmental health risks. Students in this course examine the health services system in the U. S., the role of healthcare policy and management, and the health delivery system. The recent healthcare reform legislation and its implications are explored. Topics include: the origins of the US healthcare system, health behaviors and disease, the management of health service personnel and organizations.

This course explores the key approaches used to conduct and evaluate effective public health programs. Topics include: collection of primary data, analysis of data, presentation of findings for the target audience, and information systems and technology in the planning and evaluation processes.
