Online Master of Computer Science
Complete a Master’s degree at their own pace, at their own place! Illinois Computer Science has partnered with Coursera to use its massive open online course platform to offer the MCS to students in a more flexible and affordable way than is possible on campus. Students can earn the Online MCS in as little as one year, or in as many as five years.
The Online MCS program is a non-thesis degree that requires 32 credit hours of graduate coursework, completed through eight graduate-level courses each at the four credit hour level. The Online MCS currently offers coursework in the core areas of artificial intelligence, databases, human-computer interaction, software engineering, scientific computing and high-performance computing.
Students specifically interested in a data science focus should consider the University of Illinois Master of Computer Science in Data Science Track.
Applicants without this can strengthen their application for admission by passing the optional Data Structures Proficiency Exam. The Department of Computer Science does not require GRE scores for any of its graduate programs.

Online MS in Software Engineering
Admission Criteria for MS in Software Engineering:
1. A four-year bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the United States or an equivalent international institution.
2. A minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 for the last two years of undergraduate work. If any graduate work has been completed, the average GPA must be at least 3.0

2. Scores from the General Aptitude Test of the GRE

Online Masters in Software Engineering
The Master of Science in Engineering with a concentration in Software Engineering offers specialized courses based on the fundamentals and principles of software engineering.
Applicants must fulfill the requirements of both the Graduate College and the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering.
Applicants are eligible to apply to the program if they have earned a bachelor's or master's degree in computer engineering, software engineering or a related field, from a regionally accredited institution.
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 60 credit hours of the student's first bachelor's degree program, or applicants must have a minimum of a 3.00 cumulative GPA (scale is 4.00 = "A") in the last 12 units of the postbaccalaureate transcript.
All applicants must submit:

3. Proof of English proficiency
An applicant whose native language is not English (regardless of current residency) must provide proof of English proficiency.
Applicants must provide evidence of demonstrated expertise in the area of object-oriented programming, advanced data structures, algorithm design and algorithm analysis; maturity in high-level programming (required); and successful completion of Calculus I (a minimum requirement).
**GRE scores are not required.**

Online Master of Computer Science in Data Science
The Master of Computer Science in Data Science (MCS-DS) track is a non-thesis (coursework-only) program of study that leads to the MCS degree using courses that focus on data science.
Applicants should hold a 4-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent). Students with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than CS are encouraged to apply, but to succeed in graduate-level CS courses, they must have prerequisite coursework or commensurate experience in object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, linear algebra, and statistics/probability. Applicants without this can strengthen their application for admission by passing the optional Data Structures Proficiency Exam. The recommended undergraduate GPA for applicants applying to the Professional Master's program is a 3.2/4.0 or higher.
**The Department of Computer Science does not require GRE scores for any of its graduate programs.**
Applications for the MCS do not require letters of recommendation, but will be considered if included, especially if used to justify experience in lieu of required coursework, or other irregularities.

MS in Computer Science
To be accepted to Lewis Online MS in Computer Science Program, candidates must meet the following requirements:
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics or information systems is preferred. Applicants without undergraduate coursework in computer science or a related field will take up to four courses (13 credit hours) to provide the required foundation to pursue advanced study.
2. Full admission requires 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.
3. International students are required to have a TOEFL test score greater than 550 (computer-based 213; Internet-based 79).
In addition, applicants need to submit the following items during the application process:
1. Completed application
2. Official academic transcripts from all colleges attended
3. Two-page statement of purpose
4. A current resume
5. Two letters of recommendation
6. Application fee
Under certain circumstances, students who do not meet one or more of the requirements for full admission may be admitted to the program with provisional status. This is most commonly offered to applicants who earned an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0. Students granted provisional status will be considered for full admission after they have attempted nine credit hours in the program and earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Provisionally admitted students who have not attained a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 after attempting nine credit hours of MSCS coursework will be dismissed from the program.
**The students are not required to take the GRE or GMAT to apply to this program.
Engineering Computer Science Degree Programs, Online On-Campus

3. MATH 503 Foundations of Mathematics for Computing
Prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of "C" or better. The Program Chair will determine, on an individual basis, course prerequisite requirements upon review of the student’s completed undergraduate courses, work experience, or demonstrated competency in Computer Science.
Entrance Exam- GMAT/GRE: This may be a requirement for applicants that earned a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution, with a GPA below 2.75 (on a 4.0 scale).
English Language Testing & TOEFL IELTS: Prospective students must demonstrate English Language Proficiency. The requirement is met through any of the following:
1. The applicant is a citizen of a country where English is the official language.
2. The applicant has received a bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an institution located in an English-speaking country in which the courses were taught in English.
3. The applicant has earned appropriate scores on language proficiency exams taken within the last two years, as listed in the Academic Catalog.
