To be accepted to Lewis Online MS in Computer Science Program, candidates must meet the following requirements:

1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. A bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, mathematics or information systems is preferred. Applicants without undergraduate coursework in computer science or a related field will take up to four courses (13 credit hours) to provide the required foundation to pursue advanced study.

2. Full admission requires 3.0 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale.

3. International students are required to have a TOEFL test score greater than 550 (computer-based 213; Internet-based 79).

In addition, applicants need to submit the following items during the application process:

1. Completed application

2. Official academic transcripts from all colleges attended

3. Two-page statement of purpose

4. A current resume

5. Two letters of recommendation

6. Application fee

Under certain circumstances, students who do not meet one or more of the requirements for full admission may be admitted to the program with provisional status. This is most commonly offered to applicants who earned an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.0. Students granted provisional status will be considered for full admission after they have attempted nine credit hours in the program and earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0. Provisionally admitted students who have not attained a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 after attempting nine credit hours of MSCS coursework will be dismissed from the program.

Illinois Computer Science has partnered with Coursera to use its massive open online course platform to offer the MCS to students in a more flexible and affordable way than is possible on campus. Students can earn the Online MCS in as little as one year, or in as many as five years.

The Online MCS program is a non-thesis degree that requires 32 credit hours of graduate coursework, completed through eight graduate-level courses each at the four credit hour level. The Online MCS currently offers coursework in the core areas of artificial intelligence, databases, human-computer interaction, software engineering, scientific computing and high-performance computing.

Students specifically interested in a data science focus should consider the University of Illinois Master of Computer Science in Data Science Track.

The Department of Computer Science does not require GRE scores for any of its graduate programs. Applications for the MCS do not require letters of recommendation, but they will be considered if included, especially if used to justify experience in lieu of required coursework, or other irregularities.

Printable version. Each Online MCS course is four credit hours.

Breadth coursework must have a letter grade of B- or higher. Any other course taken for letter grade must have a grade of C or higher.

Coursera fees: $79 per each Coursera MOOC course that is applied toward the Online MCS. If a required Coursera course has been completed for a certificate before the official Online MCS course started, students do not need to re-pay.

The admission process reflects Franklin University’s efforts to clearly identify the performance standards that can help predict student success in graduate level study.
