Agricultural Education
College description: The University of Illinois Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition (FSHN) is proud to offer a non-thesis Master of Science online degree. The online delivery option makes the program accessible to working professionals and students in various locations. All required lecture-based courses are delivered in live, synchronous, online sessions using distance education technology. Students must complete 32 hours of coursework and pass an oral examination. The master's of food science program must be completed within five years of initial registration.
The Agriculture Program uses Blackboard Collaborate software for its online programs; all classes are synchronous, which means the university online courses start and end at specific times of the day – usually during the weeknight evening hours in the Central Time Zone.
Online students need a computer able to manage multiple software applications simultaneously, a broadband internet connection , a relatively currently internet browser, and an audio headset.
The On-Campus Master of Science in Agricultural Education degree requires students to complete 32 hours of approved graduate level courses on campus over a span of five years. The Online Master of Science in Agricultural Education enables students to take a series of web-based courses from anywhere in the world! Each student is required to complete 32 hours of approved graduate level courses over a span of five years, and GRE scores are not required for admission. Individuals who are currently teaching with a provisional certificate in Illinois can become certified through the online degree program. Costs for Agricultural Education online courses fall under the “Graduate Base Rate.” To receive a Master’s Degree, students need to earn 32 total credits.
There is no comprehensive exam in the AGED Master’s degree program like there is for other programs. Completing a Master’s thesis is an option for students. Those who do not complete a thesis complete a “Master’s Project” that often represents constructing a theoretical capstone educational program focused on their career and personal interests.
However, most students have provided the advice that more than three courses for full-time on-campus students and two courses for part-time online students is not typically advisable.
The university online classes in Agricultural Education are, for the most part, synchronous, which means the university online courses start and end at specific times of the day – usually during the weeknight evening hours in the Central Time Zone.

Online Nutrition and Food Systems Degree
College description: Fully Online Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Systems with an emphasis in Dietetics Practice designed specifically to be integrated into a Dietetic Internship. Completion of the graduate degree and the dietetic internship are planned to be completed within a 2-year time frame. No need for additional letters of recommendation to the graduate school (DICAS letters accepted).
The fully online Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Systems emphasizing Dietetics Practice enables students enrolled in a dietetic internship to complete half of their degree concurrently with supervised practice, while the remainder of the Online Nutrition and Food Systems Degree requirements can be completed fully online.
Requirements for the Master of Science in Nutrition and Food Systems
The emphasis in Dietetic Practice is fully online and fulfills Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics requirements for supervised practice. The emphasis in Management of Child Nutrition Programs is available as a fully online program.
Please be aware that not all course choices listed in the University Bulletin are available online. However, sufficient online options are available to complete this degree.
Only students who apply to dietetic internships that are directly affiliated with the Master of Science in Nutrition & Food Systems are eligible to apply for the university program.
A master’s degree alone does not allow one to work as a dietitian nutritionist.
In addition to the coursework, students must also complete a dietetic internship that is integrated with the master’s degree.
Online classes waive the out of state fees. All coursework for this degree program is delivered in an online format.
