Under this Act, all student loans with a disbursement date of July 1, 2010 or later must be processed under what is known as the Federal Direct Loan Program. Previously, Alabama A M University participated in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), which allowed the student, to choose their lender and it encouraged the various lenders to compete for business by offering a wide array of loan repayment options and benefits. With the passage of this Act, students will no longer have that choice. Under the Direct Loan Program, the U. Education serves as the lender, rather than a bank or other financial institution. Any questions concerning loans currently under the FFELP program should be directed to the lender(s). The primary difference between Direct Loans and the Federal Family Education Loan Program, (Stafford Loan) is the source of funding. While FFELP loans are funded through a variety of banks and private lending institutions, Direct Loan funds are borrowed directly from the federal government. Direct Loans are federally insured low-interest education loans for students and parents. The Direct Loan Program will provide AAMU students with a reliable source of educational loan funding.

Students Supported on Individual Fellowships or Training Grants. Assumption of additional assignments requires prior approval in writing by the Graduate School Dean. The Request for Additional Assignment form may be found on the Graduate School website on the Forms page. If a student is already being compensated at the maximum allowed (see below), an additional assignment outside their primary appointment can only be made under special circumstances. A salary cap for Graduate Assistants and Graduate Student Trainees has been set in consultation with the Academic Programs Council and has been approved by the Provost Office. The following is a guide for all predoctoral and masters students in all disciplines. The minimum compensation level for any student appointed as a GA, GTA, GRA, or Trainee is $12,000 annually. The maximum compensation allowed for all graduate students is currently $30,600 annually. In subsequent years the maximum will be indexed to equal 90 percent of the current NSF individual fellowship stipend. If a department program sets the stipend level for its students above the maximum compensation level but then requires the students in that program to pay for their own tuition, fees and health insurance costs from stipend proceeds, only the portion of the stipend remaining after tuition, fees and insurance payment would be considered as these students’ compensation relative to the maximum compensation level allowed. In some circumstances there may be justifiable reasons for exceeding the stipend maximum. If additional assignment work is related to or augments a student’s dissertation research, if the student’s mentor and program agree to and support the additional assignment in writing, then the Graduate School Dean could be petitioned to approve a compensation level that exceeds the maximum. Teaching assignments that involve additional compensation could also be viewed as being beneficial to a student’s professional development, especially if the subject matter is either within or related to the student’s primary field of study.

A limited number of tuition scholarships may be awarded to students without assistantship appointments who have unconditional admission status and are in good academic standing. Such scholarships may be awarded for up to 9 graduate semester hours per semester (6 semester hours in the summer term). Students receiving tuition scholarships are bound by the same rules as graduate assistants with respect to course withdrawal, contingency of the award on satisfactory performance toward the graduate degree, general eligibility, and special department requirements. An appointment letter, similar to a graduate assistantship letter but without assigned duties, is prepared by the department chair and sent through the college dean to the graduate dean for approval at least one month prior to the start of the semester in which the scholarship is proposed. Additional scholarships may be available.

The Masters degree in English at Auburn is designed to develop and professionalize students within a sub-discipline in English Studies, and to bring their writing and research skills to an advanced level while providing them with experience as university-level writing teachers. Such students are well prepared for careers in writing, editing, business, secondary and community college teaching, and other professions seeking broadly educated individuals with excellent analytic and communication skills. Many of Auburn University Masters graduates pursue teaching and research careers and go on to attend doctoral programs in English, while other English graduate students use their training to develop their craft as creative writers. To graduate, MA students of all concentrations will need to complete 30 hours of coursework, meet the foreign language requirement, and compile a portfolio. See below for details or download a copy of Auburn University MA curriculum brochure. MA students in all concentrations must demonstrate reading proficiency in one foreign language. Students may satisfy this requirement in French, German, Italian, Latin, Russian, Spanish, or any other language approved by the Director of Graduate Studies MA and PhD. A student whose first language is not English may ask to have the DGS waive this requirement. The student may demonstrate reading proficiency of a foreign language in one of three ways:. The eportfolio should provide evidence not only of substantive work in the graduate program but of intellectual growth, represented in carefully selected artifacts (such as scholarly and creative work, professional documents, web pages, and teaching materials), purposeful arrangement and presentation of these, and reflective writing which works to connect, contextualize, and integrate them into a coherent, if still emerging, professional identity. Towards the end of their first year of coursework MA students should have identified which of the three tracks they want to pursue and should identify their major professor.
