Our externs learn implementing clinical behavioral and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches for children, adolescents, and their families, and consult directly with staff psychiatrists to develop effective collaborative, team-based care models.

The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders Service and the Selective Mutism Service at the Child Study Center seeks doctoral students to complete a year-long special combined externship in delivering treatments for children, adolescents, and young adults with ADHD who have organizational skills deficits. Externs also conduct neuropsychological assessment of comorbid ADHD and learning disorders and treat selective mutism.

The Autism and Related Disorders Emphasis Externship is seeking externs to provide services at the Child Study Center. We serve children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, as well as those with a wide range of social communication difficulties. As children with autism spectrum disorder also often display comorbidity with other disorders, our externs also gain significant exposure to children with ADHD and other externalizing disorders, anxiety disorders, learning disorders, and other conditions. Although the clinical focus is on children with autism spectrum disorder and comorbidities, there may be opportunities for externs to treat and evaluate children at the Child Study Center with other psychiatric presentations.

The Gender and Sexuality Service Emphasis Externship at the Child Study Center serves transgender and gender-expansive children, teens, and young adults. As transgender and gender-expansive youth also often display mental health vulnerabilities, our externs also gain significant exposure to individuals with anxiety disorders, mood disorders, ADHD and other externalizing disorders, autism spectrum disorders, learning disorders, and other conditions.
Our service utilizes evidence-based treatments, primarily cognitive behavioral therapy, to treat these conditions with particular sensitivity to the unique challenges that transgender and gender expansive youth experience. The position is open to graduate students enrolled in a doctoral program with a terminal degree of PhD or PsyD.
The Selective Mutism Service and the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity and Behavior Disorders Service at the Child Study Center seek graduate students to complete a year-long special combined externship in delivering treatments for children with ADHD who have organizational skills deficits, for children with selective mutism, cognitive behavioral therapy for children with varied disorders and dialectical behavioral therapy for adolescents. There are positions available at our campuses in New Jersey and on Long Island.
Externs learn and deliver organizational skills treatment for children with ADHD and work with elementary school students, as well as extensions of this intervention for older students. Externs also learn to deliver treatment for selective mutism. Training opportunities for delivering game-based cognitive behavioral therapy (GB-CBT) for childhood anxiety and disruptive behavior disorders and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) for adolescents with emotional dysregulation are also provided. All interventions involve extensive opportunities to work with individuals, their families, and professionals in their schools.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NYU Langone offers two externship positions in pediatric psychology with the Integrated Behavioral Health Team. Our team provides clinical services, conducts clinical research, and develops programs that address the psychosocial aspects of illness or injury and promote positive health behaviors of children and families presenting with acute or chronic medical needs. The pediatric psychology externship track offers training across these three domains through outpatient pediatric services.
Externs also attend Child Study Center weekly case conferences, as well as weekly departmental grand rounds for additional didactic time, and may choose to attend the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Consultation and Liaison Service weekly case conference.

We train child and adolescent psychiatrists who diagnose and treat children, adolescents, and young adults with complex psychiatric problems. Our program emphasizes a diverse training environment and multidisciplinary, multimodal treatment for children and their families. Our multicultural patient population and environment offer a rich and broad educational experience.
Our care settings include a 20-bed inpatient unit, a large outpatient clinic, a pediatric consultation-liaison service at Holtz Pediatrics Hospital and an emergency-crisis evaluation service. We work with children and adolescents with a full spectrum of psychiatric disorders. Our team has advanced expertise in general pediatric psychiatry areas such as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and mood and anxiety disorders. Additionally, we have several dedicated subspecialty programs, including one for patients with autism spectrum disorder and developmental intellectual disabilities, a dialectical behavioral therapy program for teens, and a program for patients with tic disorders and related conditions. We collaborate closely with the University of Miami Counseling Center at Coral Gables, which serves as a clinical rotation for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows in their second year.
