The Master of Fine Arts program in Painting at Boston University promotes the discipline in its varied manifestations as a fundamental form of artistic expression. As an art form, painting is than just an activity it is a long-term critical engagement with ideas, feelings, and sensibilities.

Critical Language Abilities: Through speaking, reading, and writing, students will become fluent in the discourses of painting. They will be able to think critically and put into language their own sensory experiences that emerge from an in-person encounter with an artwork.

The MFA in Painting is a 60-credit program that requires an average of four semesters to complete. Students may only enter in September.

The Painting + Drawing Area is committed to cutting-edge professional art training within the context of a liberal arts university. Painters are responsible for some of the most provocative and enduring expressions of contemporary visual culture. The painting program is based upon the belief that painting is a language that simultaneously upholds tradition and constantly seeks experimentation to expand and redefine its boundaries. In an atmosphere that is both supportive and challenging, students are asked to question their intentions, investigate and expand their ideas of painting, and to develop a coherent body of work that is the beginning of a dialog with the world.

Graduate students are encouraged to experiment with a wide range of technical and theoretical interests, from figuration to abstraction, and on to digital media, installations and performance. All graduate students have private studio spaces in the Ridges facility.

The Division of Drawing, Painting and Photography offers an international MFA Program in Painting. The program operates jointly in the School of Art and Design at Alfred University and at our studio facility in Düsseldorf, Germany. Students work with American and European artists and scholars, gaining an international perspective while interacting with art communities on two continents.

Each year, candidates of the Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) and Master of Fine Art (MFA) degrees showcase their work in a series of culminating thesis exhibitions.

Through concentrated studio time, significant research opportunities, and mentoring from art world professionals, this program offers a graduate experience that prepares students for leadership roles in the next generation of professional artists and arts practitioners.

This two-year program is anticipated to be highly competitive seven Painting students are admitted annually. Select teaching assistantships are awarded.

Applicants must be committed to extended international study and the practice of painting. Graduate students spend three months of each academic year in Düsseldorf engaging in intensive studio work, research, and professional practices. A minimum of sixty graduate credit hours is required. Reviews of work are scheduled at midterm and at the end of each semester.

In addition to studio courses, all graduate students take credits in a series of seminars, art history, studio electives, and technical courses relevant to their area of study.

In the second year, students write a thesis and present a MFA thesis exhibition in the School of Art and Design Fosdick-Nelson Gallery, Robert C. Turner Gallery, or an approved alternate site.

Applicants must be committed to extended international study and the practice of painting. Graduate students spend half of each academic year in Düsseldorf Germany engaging in intensive studio work, research, and professional practices. The program encourages a diversity of approaches within the unique language of painting, and fosters critical dialogue addressing contemporary global perspectives. All courses are taught in English. A valid passport is required.

Applicants for admission should hold the baccalaureate degree with the equivalent of sixty credit hours in studio courses. A portfolio of completed works could be considered the equivalent of some studio courses.

In addition to the transcripts and letters of recommendation required of all students, applicants to the MFA program must present a portfolio showing competency in their art practice. When submitting the portfolio to Slideroom be sure to indicate the program for which you are applying and provide appropriate portfolio.

The School of Art and Design at Alfred University offers graduate study in multiple divisional areas: Ceramic Art, Electronic Integrated Arts, Sculpture Dimensional Studies (concentration in either glass art or sculpture) and Painting. Applicants should make clear to which MFA program they are applying.

The Alfred Düsseldorf international painting MFA does not offer a full tuition waiver similar to other Alfred MFA programs. The tuition is based on SUNY guidelines and is less than half the cost of other highly ranked programs. All accepted applicants are awarded assistantships for each of the 4 semesters. The graduate assistantship can be in the form of a teaching assistantship, teaching internship, or social media and facilities coordinator. In all cases, the student receives a stipend of $7000 for each academic year.

The MFA in Drawing is a 60-credit, 2 to 3-year program of study for students who wish to further their interest and investigation of drawing as a contemporary art medium. The MFA degree is the credential that signifies the artist capacity to work independently in a discriminating, distinctive, and professional manner.

The program provides an educational context where drawing is considered a core activity related to other disciplines, and also an end in itself.

MFA candidates can pursue their own goals, investigate contemporary concepts, hone technical skills, and advance personal vision through intense, focused individual studio activity.

In addition to the studio experience, the students are required to take courses in art history, critical theory, philosophy, and a broad complement of university offerings in order to cultivate their intellectual and aesthetic maturation.

A limited number of assistantships are available on a competitive basis. This award is subject to the work needs of the position and department, your satisfactory performance of duties, your academic record, and availability of funds, and may be subject to change.

International students: official TOEFL iBT, IELTS, Pearson PTE or Duolingo (if accepted by program) score. Unofficial scores are accepted for admissions application review, once enrolled official scores are required and must be sent by the testing agency (copies scans not accepted). Some programs require higher minimum scores (see program-specific requirements). Most programs also accept the Duolingo with a minimum score of 95. The following programs do not accept the Duolingo: Art Education, Biology Marine Biology, Nursing (MS, DNP, PhD), Psychology: Clinical, and Public Policy.

SAIC highly acclaimed Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio is a 60-credit program that supports creative work, inquiry, and investigation across 12 different departments as part of the advanced preparation of fine arts practitioners.

Graduate studios for MFA students are spread across campus in clusters that allow for robust interdisciplinary exchange.

Graduate-level courses and topical seminars support individual studio work by exposing students to the larger dialogues around the production, exhibition, and function of art as well as its expanded cultural production and reception. Graduate critiques, central to the MFA experience, alternate between discipline-specific panels in the fall semester and interdisciplinary panels in the spring semester.

The purpose of the graduate studio program is to prepare students to enter into their chosen fields of practice or to pursue their unique professional pathways as independent artists or cultural practitioners. It is a rigorous and demanding degree in ways that often exceed the boundaries of the studio. As important as demonstrating perfection of technical skills, articulate communication, and conceptual acuity is a student ability to demonstrate insight, independence, and a generosity of spirit.

Each of the studio departments at SAIC has a distinct, but porous, culture.

SAIC requires applicants to apply online. Filing an online application requires a valid credit card and a current email address. You may apply to up to three programs with one application and fee. If you are applying to either the MFA in Studio or the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio you may select up to three departments of entry.

A conferred four-year baccalaureate degree or its equivalent is required for admission to all graduate programs at SAIC. Transcripts are records of your studies that list the courses you completed, the grades received, and provide evidence of degree conferral. They may include grade sheets, exam results, final diplomas, degrees, or graduation certificates. Official copies are issued in the original language directly by your university. Photos, notarized copies, facsimiles, or email transmissions are not acceptable.

Official translations are expected for all educational documents issued in a language other than English. A translation agency or university language department should issue official translations typed on official stationary and the translator must attest proficiency in the original language and indicate their translations are accurate word-for-word.

During the application process an unofficial transcript is acceptable for review pending an Admissions decision. Official transcripts are required upon admission. Include transcripts both official and unofficial from all universities colleges from which a degree was obtained or prerequisites were fulfilled. If you are in the process of completing a bachelor degree when you apply, a transcript showing your first three years of study is acceptable.

Students admitted to a graduate program who have not received a high school diploma, GED or equivalent are not eligible for federal Title IV financial aid funds.

Discuss how you came to focus on the body of work that you wish to pursue at the graduate level. Also discuss future directions or goals for your work, and finally describe how the SAIC program(s) to which you are applying is are suited to your professional goals.

A statement of intent is required for all graduate programs though the content varies by department.

A current résumé is required. A resume is required for all graduate programs.

Applicants are required to submit an E-Portfolio, though the content varies by department. You must submit a separate E-Portfolio for each program or studio department to which you apply. After you pay the application fee and submit the application form, an E-Portfolio for each of the programs you selected in the application form will automatically appear in your SlideRoom dashboard.

The department conducts interviews by invitation only. Applicants who pass the preliminary review will be invited to schedule an interview in Mid-February. Notification will be sent by late January. For students at a distance or unable to travel, interviews may be conducted remotely.

The Painting + Printmaking is committed to supporting our students, not only in terms of their practice but also in terms of their financial well being. We believe that one of the best ways to prepare an artist for success in their professional practice is to leave them in the best possible financial situation after they earn their degree. We offer a range of support strategies, including Graduate Teaching Assistantships, Graduate Research Grants, Graduate Student Travel Grants, and sponsored residencies with affiliated programs.

A number of graduate teaching assistantships and fellowships are available to current and incoming graduate students. Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) provide full-tuition waivers and generous stipends in exchange for 15 hours of work per week.

Current students can apply for VCUarts graduate research grants for support towards expenses related to exhibitions, conference presentations, or other professional engagements.

A residency for students to attend a live work summer residency in Italy.

In most cases, an independent study will only be granted if it is the only option for a student to graduate in the semester that the independent study course is requested.

Overrides will not be provided into courses that are full when there are spaces open in other sections of the same class. These overrides are not guaranteed. We encourage students to check for openings throughout the add drop period and add the class directly if a space opens up.

Hoffberger School of Painting is one of the nation most selective graduate programs.

The LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting is one of the only graduate programs in the country to focus solely on painting, giving a select group of highly motivated painters the opportunity to find their individual voices within a supportive community. Trips to major art centers are integral to the discourse as students position their painting in the contemporary art world. Primarily a graduate school of painting, students find their way toward their unique form of expression.

Students need a high level of competence and commitment to succeed at the L.E. Hoffberger School of Painting. The emphasis of the program is on independent work in response to critique. Each student is given a private studio. Students take responsibility for many aspects of running the weekly program, which remains flexible in response to changing needs.

A total of 60 credits is required for the MFA of these, 48 must be in studio coursework and 12 in liberal arts seminars.

Enrollment is limited to 20 students who intend to pursue a career in the arts and who have already developed considerable proficiency in their medium. Along with a thorough knowledge of the discipline of painting, the program places emphasis on the development of the student own vision, clear critical thinking, and disciplined studio practice that will continue into the student professional career.

During your two years in residence here, you take on a serious investigation of the possibilities and realities presented by contemporary painting.

Graduate students in Painting have 24-hour access to private and semi-private studios in RISD Fletcher Building, a space that promotes discourse with peers in other fine arts graduate programs. It also houses critique spaces, a woodshop and a computer area for shared use.

Grad students in Painting receive teaching assistantships and enjoy the opportunity to teach a course on their own during Wintersession of the second year.

In the final semester, degree candidates create a comprehensive body of work under the guidance of a thesis committee. All MFA candidates produce a written thesis and participate in an annual graduate thesis exhibition of work by students graduating from RISD advanced degree programs.

If your academic credentials are prepared in a language other than English, they must be translated into English by an approved translator before submitting. Enrolling students will later be required to submit official transcripts.

Digital + Medi Your portfolio should contain 10 samples total, which can be a combination of media (e.g., images, video, sound). You may submit up to five videos as project documentation or excerpts of time-based media. In your portfolio you are encouraged to submit at least one video that clearly demonstrates your research and or work process. Total runtime for all videos should be no than five minutes.

Furniture Design: In the MFA programs, students often make their own work as a means to understand complex ideas. The idea is that critical making combined with critical thinking leads to innovative objects. This experimental approach applies to tests and models as well as to full-size objects at human scale. Material experimentation includes traditional, new and hybrid materials as appropriate to individual student interest. If possible, you should aim to show finished photographed work and minimize the number of process images you include.

Landscape Architecture: All applicants to the Master of Landscape Architecture degree programs are required to submit a portfolio and an additional video essay. Your portfolio should contain 10 individually produced and carefully chosen images of work that reflects your interests in landscape and the discipline of landscape architecture. Applicants to the MLA-1 program who have no prior design training may include photographs, sketches or written work that conveys their ability to observe, identify and explore spatial conditions within the landscape. All other applicants should include a selection of work that best represents the development of their interest in this field of study. All work should be labeled to indicate if it is academic, professional or personal. If team projects are presented, your individual contribution must be clearly identified. The portfolio should include a minimal amount of text.

At least one goal you hope to achieve in your graduate education.

You are encouraged to be authentic and heartfelt in your response. This essay will function as the beginning of a conversation you will continue to have if you enter the program at RISD and it does not have to be the same information provided in your written essay. Maximum length: 2 minutes.

Master of Arts in Teaching: Your portfolio should consist of 20 images exhibiting the depth and breadth of your studio experience. Ten images should represent work that reflects your investigations within a single medium seven images should represent your confidence in handling a variety of media and three images need to be samples of drawings.

Master of Arts in Art + Design Education: Submit a portfolio of 20 images that most clearly represent your creative practice as an artist or designer.

The object of your statement is to introduce yourself to the Admissions Committee as a thinker, scholar and writer, and you should address in detail your intellectual interests and proposed topic(s) of graduate study.

Your statement should also reflect your understanding of the contours and demands of graduate study in Global Arts and Cultures at RISD.

Your statement should also reflect your understanding of the Illustration MFA course of study and what you hope to gain by completing the program.

Master of Arts in Art + Design Education: Submit a written statement (500-750 words) describing your interest in art and design education and your desire to enter the TLAD MA program specifically. Please be sure to address the following questions within your statement:.

Our MA program is unique in that students customize a program of study.

Photography: Provide a clearly written statement of purpose (max. 750 words) explaining why you need to attend graduate school now, why you want to attend RISD specifically, and what you believe that you and your practice needs that RISD and its community can offer.

Global Arts and Cultures: Applicants to the MA program in Global Arts and Cultures are required to submit an example of critical and or analytical writing on a topic clearly related to Global Arts and Cultures. Please indicated if your writing sample is excerpted from a longer work. If it is, please make sure it forms a coherent argument and is framed such that the Admissions Committee understands its function as part of a longer work.

Applicants are required to submit three letters of recommendation. Recommendation letters should be written by teachers or other professionals who have firsthand knowledge of your art or academic achievements and can comment on your potential for graduate study.

All applicants who speak English as a second language, including US citizens, must submit results from any one of these three options: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or Duolingo (an online English test). Since proficiency in English is a prerequisite for acceptance, applicants must attain an acceptable score on their chosen test RISD requires a minimum result of 93 on the TOEFL or a 6.5 on the IELTS.

Duolingo test results may take up to four days to be received by RISD.

The language test requirement may be waived for applicants who have studied in an institution where English is the language of instruction.

Results from the Graduate Record Examination are not required as part of the application process.
