The MA in European History, Politics and Society combines interdisciplinary course work on modern and contemporary Europe with expert training in writing, research, and presentation. Students pursue individualized programs within the frame of Europe as a whole and its relations with other world regions. The program is supported by a renowned faculty and Columbia's extensive resources for the study of European history, politics, economics, culture, and society. The program is ideal for students who want to combine advanced work in the humanities or social sciences with deep knowledge of Europe and its place in the world. Graduates of European History, Politics and Society go on to careers in government, business, journalism, and the non-profit sector as well as doctoral and professional programs at North American and European universities.

The Master of Arts degree in European and Mediterranean studies is an interdisciplinary program, designed to prepare students for professions requiring an advanced understanding of Europe and the Mediterranean region. This flexible degree allows students to tailor their studies according to their interests across a range of disciplines, including history, political science, cultural studies, anthropology, art history, international relations, regional studies focusing on the EU, Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean, and much .

The MA degree may be completed in 12 months and over three sememsters, fall, spring, and summer. Students are encouraged to conduct thesis research in Europe over the summer.

Complete a master thesis project and oral defense.

Examines the formation of the European nation-state starting with the French Revolution. Provides an of key issues, including citizenship, exclusion, immigration, identity, nationalism, security, and the creation of the European Union and its policy formation.

Trains European studies graduate students in approaches to research and in the sources and uses of research materials on Europe. Students start work on what will eventually become the master thesis. Topics of discussion include select an appropriate topic, formulate a question it, and design and develop the argument at the core of the thesis.

Students must register for the EURO-GA 3900 course over the summer, as this is an indicator that they are completing their thesis research. Students may travel abroad to complete their research. Students generally submit the first draft of their theses in the last week of July, and a final draft of their theses in mid-August. Defenses generally take place the first or second week of September.

Electives can be taken at departments across NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science, as well as other schools. A course must have a significant focus on Europe ( than 50% of coursework) to fulfill program requirements.

The European Cultural Studies Program (ECS) offers students the opportunity to study English and continental literature in translation in conjunction with one or related disciplines: fine arts, history, music, philosophy, politics, sociology and theater arts.

Many of our students spend some time abroad to get a feel for the cultures in which they are most interested. ECS majors have gone on to graduate school (in history, politics, English and other fields), law school, business school and advanced programs in international studies.

Students in the European and Eurasian studies program are required to demonstrate proficiency in a modern language other than English by passing the Elliott School-administered foreign language proficiency reading and speaking examination at the currently-required level of proficiency. The Elliott School administers foreign language proficiency examinations once in the fall and once in the spring semesters. Students should plan to take the language proficiency examination as soon as possible following their matriculation in the program. Students have three opportunities to pass the examination. Failure to pass the examination for a third time results in dismissal from the program.
