Through this joint venture between the University of Puerto-Rico and Yale, students in Puerto Rico have the opportunity to gain a combined M.D. Ph.D. degree. You must apply to medical school at UPR and graduate school in BBS at Yale. If admitted to both programs, you will conduct your medical training at UPR and your Ph.D. training at Yale.

Established in 2011, the Puerto Rico Economy Project (PREP) is directed by Gustavo Setrini.The project has developed a number of approaches to investigating optimal path for development which have been applied to set of sectoral and thematic studies that aim to provide a conceptual and empirical basis to design new economic development strategies for the Island.

The goal of the program is to develop recommendations for economic policy and expanding economic activity across distinct sectors of the Puerto Rican economy.

The Department of Hispanic Studies at Brown University trains students to be both specialists and generalists, language teachers and literature scholars, researchers and active intellectuals. The faculty represents a broad range of topics and approaches, with particular strengths in early modern and colonial literature, modern and contemporary Latin American narrative, poetry and transatlantic studies.

Class sizes are kept small, to ensure close interaction between students and faculty during the five years of the program, and students receive careful guidance on individual plans of study, professional issues, and job placement.

The university encourage our students to take advantage of the many opportunities for disciplinary exchange and collaborations that characterize intellectual life at Brown, especially through the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, the Cogut Institute for the Humanities, the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women, and the Program for Renaissance and Early Modern Studies. Excellent general scholarly resources are available through the David Rockefeller Library, while the John Carter Brown and Hay libraries contain extraordinary holdings in special materials. Finally, our students also have the opportunity to take courses at neighboring institutions such as Harvard and Yale, or to study abroad at the Universidad de Salamanca.

The M.A. degree in Chicana and Chicano Studies is not intended to be a stand-alone, terminal degree, but is, rather, a requirement for the Ph.D. Students admitted to the Ph.D. program without an M.A. degree will follow Plan A. Students entering the Ph.D. program with an approved M.A. thesis should follow Plan B.

Plan A: Students must successfully complete a total of 40 units (normally ten courses), completed while in graduate status and taken for a letter grade with a minimum 3.0 grade-point average. Of the 40 units, at least 32 must be completed at the graduate level. Up to four units of upper division undergraduate courses may be applied to the 40-unit requirement. One 500-series course (up to four units) may be applied toward the 40-unit requirement

Plan B: Students entering the Ph.D. program with an approved M.A. thesis are expected to take a minimum of 44 units (regularly 11 courses), taken for a letter grade.

The M.A. Ph.D. program in the Chicana and Chicano Studies trains scholars as interdisciplinary researchers equipped to work from a broad range of perspectives, approaches, and methodologies. The curriculum examines the experiences of Chicana and Chicano communities through subfields that encompass history and narrativity, cultural production, and social processes. Among the first of its kind, this graduate program links theory with practice, scholarship with teaching, and the academy with the community. Please note that the Chicana and Chicano Studies does not offer a terminal MA degree. Admission is into the doctorate program only.

PhD student Sarah Bruno explores bomba as a practice of healing and strength.

At its most basic, bomba is an Afro-Puerto Rican music and dance style. But on a closer look, bomba is also a history wrapped in emotion, strength, and healing.

Bomba is a powerful tool for understanding how Afro-Puerto Rican women felt historically and in modern times because of its roots in tradition and ancestry, Bruno said.

Bruno says bomba was also used as a healing mechanism after Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017.

On September 20, 2017, Puerto Rico was hit by Category 4 Hurricane María. In the wake of the hurricane, 100% of the island of Puerto Rico was without power and 80% without water service. The massive blackout, wind gusts of up to 203 mph, and widespread flooding have caused communications and transportation infrastructures, and basic services to collapse. In an island already in economic distress, Hurricane María deepened the humanitarian crisis left after Hurricane Irma.

The Master of Arts degree in History, with a concentration in Chicana Chicano Studies, is for those who intend to pursue carers that are beneficial to the Chicana and Chicano community: to better understand the culture and history of Chicana and Chicano communities offer educational opportunities for those planning to become professionals who will serve these communities create options for those planning to continue with their academic careers in Chicana and Chicano studies and further serve the needs of the community’s Hispanic population as a designated Hispanic Serving Institution.

Students must meet the CSU requirements for admission to a master’s degree program. Please consult the Graduate Admissions section in this catalog for complete information. In addition, applicants must have a grade-point average of at least 3.0 in the last 60 semester units and a 3.0 grade-point average in upper-division history courses. Only those who have at least a 3.5 GPA in upper-division history courses may request an exemption. After fulfilling the university requirements, the applicant’s records are sent to the History Department’s graduate coordinator for additional evaluation. Students with deficiencies will be considered for admission only after they have completed courses approved by the coordinator.

The CSU Northridge Chicana o Studies Department condemns the racist, misogynistic, anti-immigrant, violent, and homophobic conversations between former Los Angeles City Council President and Councilmember Nury Martinez, Councilmember Kevin de León, Councilmember Gil Cedillo, and former Los Angeles County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera. As a step toward accountability for the harm they caused we call for the immediate resignations of Councilmembers Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo. We acknowledge that Nury Martinez has resigned from the City Council and Ron Herrera from the LA Labor Federation.

As one of the largest Chicana o Studies Departments in the nation it is our responsibility to respond forcefully when elected officials and others engage in hate speech against members of the African American and Indigenous communities, as well as of other marginalized communities. It is especially urgent that we raise our voices when the perpetrators are Chicanx Latinx and are in positions of power and privilege to act on their hate speech. As educators we are also deeply troubled by the racism and violent speech directed at the young adopted African American child of Councilman Bonin.

We share many of the same social and environmental justice struggles with Black, Zapotec, Mayan, Native American, Indigenous, Chicanx Latinx, Central American, Asian American, Middle Eastern, and LGBTQ+ communities. Our very futures are intertwined with one another and the need for authentic solidarity among each other is urgent. We call for unity, solidarity, and the continued struggle for social justice in Los Angeles and beyond.

MEMO From President Harrison, March 23, 2020: Returning to Instruction Under a New Paradigm.

Courses were designed to provide students with an awareness of the social, political, economic, historical and cultural realities in our society. It was structured as an inter-disciplinary, area studies department in order to offer a Chicana o critique and perspective within the traditional disciplines.

A Master of Arts program was subsequently developed and now prepares students for academic, public service, education, artistic and cultural performance careers.
