The MA in Islamic Studies focuses on the cultural, political, and religious history of Islam and the nations and populations linked to the practice of this faith. Students pursue their interest in the field through the course offerings of several departments at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences as well as, to a lesser extent, other schools at Columbia. Courses give students the foundation to specialize in one period or interdisciplinary area as they design an individual program of study in consultation with the program coordinator. The program concludes with a thesis on a limited topic within the student area of concentration.

The Master of Arts in Islamic Studies examines Islam’s relation to other religious traditions and the contemporary debates and issues concerning Muslims globally. From its inception to its place among contemporary nations and religions, Islam and its global identity are central areas of study in this unique master’s program. Interdisciplinary concentrations are available to Religion students, including American Studies, Early Modern Studies, Hemispheric Transnational Studies, Media Studies, and Museum Studies.
One year ago, we lost our beloved Provost and Professor of Islamic and Cultural Studies, Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Abdurrahman Farajaje. A person of irrepressible spirit, Dr. Farajaje was a cherished teacher, colleague, friend, and intersectional scholartivist. He inspired countless students inside and outside of the classroom.
The MA degree program is designed to provide students with a rigorous background in both traditional and analytical approaches to Islamic Studies. The program offers two distinct areas of concentration: Islamic Theology and Islam and Global Studies. The Islamic Theology concentration will train students in such disciplines as Qur’anic studies, Hadith studies, Islamic Jurisprudence , and Islamic Spirituality. The Islam and Global Studies concentration will focus on Islamic history, international studies, and critical theory.
