The Graduate School at Cornell is organized into "Training Fields," that span college and department administrative units. Fields draw their graduate faculty from multiple disciplines and departments, so students have access to a diversity of scholarship in their respective areas of study.

Every candidate for the Ph.D. degree in Entomology is expected to submit a thesis at the end of their degree program. The details of thesis content and construction vary among students. A Ph.D. degree can be conferred once your thesis has been judged to be “complete” by your Major Advisor and Special Committee.

Ph.D. students in Entomology are required to take what we call the "A exam", ideally in the second year of your degree program. The Exam is administered by the Special Committee, and will vary depending on the composition of your committee. The format of the exam is generally oral, and will include a written component. Topics to be covered may include anything relevant to your proposed research and degree program. Your Advisor and Committee Members will guide you in preparation for your A exam.

Dual (MA MSLIS) in Religious Studies and Library Science.

Component 1: Masters of Science in Library and Information Science.

The Palmer School of Library and Information Science offers the full Master of Science in Library and Information Science (M.S.L.I.S.) in Manhattan. It is housed in the renowned Bobst Library of New York University, an outstanding research facility in the heart of Greenwich Village, overlooking Washington Square.

The dual degree allows student to graduate with an MSLIS from the Palmer School, accredited by the American Library Association, and Master degree from any department at NYU, including Africana Studies. The Palmer School has elective courses in information technology, subject reference and organization of information, web architecture, digital libraries, information retrieval, metadata, collaborative technologies, rare books, archives and management.

Students enrolled in the dual degree program participate in a mentorship program with NYU Libraries' library subject specialists (LIS 785).

In fulfillment of the degree, students may elect to complete a thesis paper as their capstone project. Although the thesis paper is not graded, students may elect to enroll in a Thesis Research course (with departmental permission) for a grade and for a maximum of 4 credits as they work toward completion of the paper. As an alternative to the thesis, students may instead choose to take a written comprehensive exam as their capstone project. This requires securing an examination adviser with whom the student will design a set of questions around their particular field of study. The exam will be administered in the student final semester, and will receive either a grade of P (pass) or F (fail). Students will not receive credits for completion of the exam they must have completed, or be in the process of completing, the required 24 credits at the time of examination.

The Doctoral Program at the UNC School of Information and Library Science (SILS) provides an environment that enables creative and energetic students to become innovative thinkers and leaders.

Our LIS program has been accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) since 1928.

The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) recognizes the ALA COA as the authority for assessing the quality of education offered by graduate programs in the field of library and information studies.

In order to maintain accreditation, an MSLIS program must submit to a regular process that involves rigorous, ongoing self-evaluation. The results of that evaluation are verified through an external review conducted by the Committee on Accreditation. In addition, every program submits data to ALA on an annual basis and submits regular biennial reports.

A special emphasis is placed on behaviors of children and youth.

A minimum of 36 credits must be taken in advanced course work. The student must receive a letter grade in each course taken in this 36-credit requirement, except for the teaching practicum course.

An additional 18 credits are required, which must be applied to dissertation research and writing however, regardless of the number of credits taken, no than 18 credits for dissertation research and writing may be applied toward graduation. In order to register for, and successfully complete, dissertation credits, students must show evidence of work toward the dissertation by completing the Dissertation Credit Tracking Checklist and updating it at the end of the term.

The minimum of 36 credits of course work, all of which must be on the graduate level, must be distributed as follows:.

3 credits: LIS 3000 Introduction to Doctoral Studies.

9 credits: 3000-level doctoral seminars offered by SCI.

6 credits: Courses in research methodology and statistics.

3000-level independent studies or doctoral seminars offered by SCI (maximum of 6 credits).

SLIS offers multiple official joint degree programs, where you can earn your MA is LIS while concurrently getting another degree at The University of Iowa.

This joint program allows students with strong interests in the physical book to acquire training in the book arts, book history, and material book studies. The earned expertise in the production and legacy of the book as a physical artifact can be an asset for those focused on careers in special collections librarianship. The combined degree requires a total of 81 s.h. of credit across the two programs. Students interested in a librarianship career with a general interest in the physical book should consider the BLIS program. This degree option is only available in person.

The School of Library and Information Science offers a joint Juris Doctor Master of Arts with the College of Law. The primary goal of this program is integration of the two areas of study.Students in the joint program may apply a limited amount of credit toward both degrees. Effective Fall 2019, up to 6 s.h. in law may be applied toward the M.A. in library and information science. Up to 12 s.h. in library and information science may be applied to the JD. Students in the joint program take law courses their first year and begin taking School of Library and Information Science courses in their second year. Separate application to each degree program is required. Applicants must be admitted to both programs before they may be admitted to the joint degree program. Elective courses are also available for those wishing to specialize in law librarianship but who do not wish to pursue the JD.

The combined MA in library and information science PhD in English program prepares students for careers in academic libraries as humanities subject specialists, reference and instruction librarians, first-year experience librarians, special collections librarians and curators, and archivists.

Students who are enrolled in a PhD program in another academic unit at the University of Iowa may apply to pursue a joint interdisciplinary PhD through the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS).

SLIS students may work with SLIS and a second academic unit to create an interdisciplinary PhD.
