The Department of Mathematics graduate program has minimal requirements and maximal research and educational opportunities. It differentiates itself from other top mathematics institutions in the U.S. in that the curriculum emphasizes, from the start, independent research. The students are extremely motivated and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. While theyurge independent work and research, a real sense of camaraderie exists among the graduate students. As a result, the atmosphere created is one of excitement and stimulation and mentoring and support. There also exists a strong scholarly relationship between the department and the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), located a short distance from campus. Students are expected to write a dissertation in four years but may be provided an additional year to complete their work if deemed necessary. Each year, the graduates are successfully launched into academic positions at premier mathematical institutions and industry.

The department offers a broad variety of research-related courses as well as introductory (or “bridge”) courses in several areas, which help first-year students strengthen their mathematical background. Students also acquire standard beginning graduate material primarily through independent study and consultations with the faculty and fellow students.

The Division of Applied Mathematics is devoted to research, education and scholarship. By its nature, our work is and always has been inter– and multidisciplinary. Among the research areas represented in the division are dynamical systems and partial differential equations, control theory, probability and stochastic processes, numerical analysis and scientific computing, fluid mechanics, computational biology, statistics, and pattern theory.

The graduate program in applied mathematics includes around 50 Ph.D. students, with many of them working on interdisciplinary projects. Joint research projects exist with faculty in various biology and life sciences departments and the departments of Chemistry, Computer Science, Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences, Earth, Environmental, and Planetary Sciences, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics and Neuroscience, as well as with faculty in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
