The Music offers programs in Musicology and in Composition The Musicology program incorporates three areas: historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and music theory. Within these areas, research and teaching focus on a wide range of topics, including music history in the West, non-Western musics and cultures, popular and urban musics, jazz, analytical methods, music cognition, music aesthetics, and the philosophy of music.

The Masters Program in Digital Musics is an interdisciplinary program for composers, artists and scholars working at the intersection of sonic arts and other disciplines including performance, design, technology, music theater, installation, cognitive neuroscience, computer science, improvisation and acoustics.

Music Theory Placement Tests are given during February auditions for applicants for the DMA degree, for applicants to the Master of Music in Music Theory Pedagogy degree, and for those applying for assistantships in Music Theory Students whose test scores are less than excellent will be placed into Music Theory 1 2 for their first year at Peabody. The Johns Hopkins University does not accept AP credits in music theory.

The Master of Sacred Music Program purpose is to train professional musicians for work in Christian churches and to prepare those who desire it for the Doctorate in Musical Arts in performance or the PhD in music history, ethnomusicology or liturgics. Through a program of study that takes advantage of Notre Dame strengths in music performance, music history, music theory, and liturgical studies, graduates of the program develop high degrees of musical skill, as they also gain working knowledge of the worship lives of Christian congregations, integrating the artistic, scholarly and pastoral dimensions requisite for the profession.

Applied Music Program: Instruction in Vocal or Instrumental Music Voice. For graduate students who have met the tuition requirement and are paying the registration fee to continue active enrollment while preparing for a preliminary examination. Computers and Music will be taught online, combining synchronous lectures and discussion groups with asynchronous viewing and listening assignments.
