Orthotists design, make, and fit adaptive orthopedic braces, which are used to support weakened or defective body parts, such as the neck, back, and limbs. Prothetists design, make, and fit prostheses, which are artificial limbs or facial parts. These are used to replace body parts lost by injury or missing from birth. Professionals with this expertise are able to give new life and mobility to patients across the globe. Many of our Orthotics and Prosthetics pre-health students go on to further study at Loma Linda University, and become engaged in many aspects of national and international service.

Conceived within the Loma Linda University School of Allied Health Professions (SAHP), this program requires 96 quarter hours of prerequisite course work followed by 10 quarters if Master of Science courses. Upon completion, the graduate will be eligible to apply for a National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE) accredited residency. Upon completion of the residency, the student will be eligible to sit for the American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC) exams.

The professions of prosthetics and orthotics are specialized allied health professions that combine a unique blend of clinical and technical skills. Professionals in this field design, fabricate, and fit orthoses and prostheses for a broad range of clients from pediatric to geriatric.

We also offer a five-year combined BS MSPO program.

The Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics (MSPO) is a full-time, on-campus program that prepares students for entry into the fields of prosthetics and orthotics. We are one of 13 accredited MSPO programs in the United States.

Admission into the program is offered to those who hold a bachelor degree, have completed the prerequisite courses, and otherwise qualify for admission.

The MSPO curriculum provides students with strong foundational coursework in biomechanics, neuroscience, and kinesiology. A sequence of scientific inquiry courses provides students with the opportunity to engage in evidence-based practice as key members of the health care community. The curriculum is presented in the context of a collaborative university environment that includes the health professions, especially physical therapy, engineering, and technology. Elective courses in pediatrics and education are available as a support for future professional concentrations.

Upon completion of the degree requirements, all graduates are mandated to participate in a postgraduate, two-year residency as a prerequisite for the board certification exams.

The Hursey Center Our New Academic Building.

The Hursey Center opened in Fall 2021 and includes state-of-the-art labs and classrooms for ENHP students. Facilities include labs for motion analysis, human performance, physical therapy, prosthetics and orthotics, nursing simulation and .

Post-baccalaureate students may MSPO program. An overall GPA of 3.2 is preferred. Students must have earned at least a C or 2.0 grade in each of the prerequisite courses. While GRE test scores are not required, they may be submitted to strengthen the application. The Admission Committee will consider all application materials. Candidates will be accepted on a competitive basis. The priority filing date for receipt of all application materials is December 1.

The MSPO program starts classes the first week of June. The admissions committee will conduct a fair and thorough process for all applicants. Applicants submitting their completed application prior to December 1 will receive preferred notification. The application window allows us the opportunity to provide our accepted students sufficient time to make preparations to attend.

The Prosthetics and Orthotics program offered by the Newington Certificate Program (NCP) in Orthotics and Prosthetics Hanger Inc. joined with the University of Hartford to offer the MSPO Program in 2011. Our MSPO program is fully accredited as an orthotic and prosthetic education program by the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE). The Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) also accredits the program. Additionally, the Master of Science in Prosthetics and Orthotics has been approved by the State of Connecticut Higher Education.

As a CAAHEP-accredited program, graduates are eligible to initiate a NCOPE-accredited residency. Upon completion of this residency, candidates are eligible to sit for the American Board of Certification (ABC) practitioner certification exams. Successful completion of these steps and additional criteria may be required for an individual to become licensed by an individual state. Majoring in Orthotics and Prosthetics involves the study of design and fit braces, artificial limbs, and other devices that help individuals lead full lives. Students will learn to effectively analyze, design, and construct appropriate orthotics and prosthetics and make sound ethical decisions surrounding their use. The MSPO Program is an entry-level professional program that prepares student practitioners with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to provide services to both the traditional and underserved communities in the field of prosthetics and orthotics.

ASU is the only university in the state of Alabama to offer the Master of Science in Prosthetics Orthotics, and only one of 13 in the nation to offer the degree. Cohorts of 10 students are admitted once annually to begin a sequence of five semesters (Fall-Spring-Summer-Fall-Spring), at full-time enrollment. it is in-person instruction only.

Students will learn assess patients with impairment of human movement or musculoskeletal abnormalities, formulate appropriate prescription recommendations, implement O P treatment plans using effective clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills, comply with practice management plans, and integrate in lifelong learning skills. Students will engage in educational activities in foundational and applied sciences, clinical decision-making, principles of research, application of evidence-based practice, and other necessary areas in the context of effective prosthetics and orthotics practice.

Graduates from the program will seek employment at residency sites and complete 12 months in the discipline of prosthetics or orthotics, or 18 months for both disciplines simultaneously. Completion of residency is required for eligibility in professional certification, and board certification exams are completed after this time as well.

The Alabama State University MSPO Program admitted its first cohort of students in Fall 2012. On March 15, 2019, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) awarded Alabama State University Prosthetics and Orthotics Program with continuing accreditation.

UT Southwestern has been a leader in prosthetics-orthotics education since 1982.

Our Master of Prosthetics-Orthotics Program is a full-time, post-baccalaureate curriculum that begins once a year in May and ends 19 months later in December.

At the end of 19 months, successful students receive a Master of Prosthetics-Orthotics degree and go directly into residency training. This is currently 12 months for prosthetics and 12 months for orthotics.
