The Ph.D. program in Peace Studies prepares students in research methodologies associated with the disciplines of anthropology, history, political science, psychology, sociology and theology. Columbia University's Environment, Peace, and Security Certification of Professional Achievement will prepare you to understand the rapidly changing connections between environment and security dynamics, and will equip you to apply best-practice tools for managing the risks that arise from such linkages. This program is aimed at practitioners with responsibility for providing assessments and warnings regarding environment-security risks or for designing programs and investments to manage such risks. Participating students receive an immersive study experience at the Universidad de los Andes designed to expand their knowledge of human rights and conflict resolution.

Consulting and Conflict Resolution offers you a systematic methodology for improving your interpersonal communications skills as well as your effectiveness as a consultant, mediator, and business leader. In the course students learn how employ the strategies that experts use to handle difficult people, to circumvent the dirty tricks that hard bargainers play, and to get their business recommendations and advice implemented. Students role-play consultants, clients, CEO investors, etc. in real business cases and receive extensive feedback on their performance. Students also have the opportunity to negotiate with a high-level labor negotiator and to consult with experienced management consultants playing the roles of some of their most difficult clients.

This joint degree of Master of Arts in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies (NEJS) and Conflict Resolution and Coexistence combines a rich and specific knowledge of the historical, religious, linguistic, and cultural dimensions of the Near East with professional skills for implementing successful interventions that enable groups, nations, and the region to embrace coexistence values.

TheConflict Resolution and Coexistence program (COEX) at the Heller School for Social Policy and Managementbuilds an understanding of the structural and psychosocial causes of conflict and violence from the local to the global. Students develop the professional skills needed to design, facilitate, monitor and evaluate strategic interventions that prevent, mitigate or resolve violent conflicts. Students also learn build partnerships delivering coexistence work through security, democracy, human rights, education and development.

The Near Eastern and Judaic Studies department provides a deep understanding in the fields that it embraces: the study of the history, religion, languages, and literature of the Jewish people, Arabic and Islamic civilizations, early Christianity and the languages and culture of the Bible and the Ancient Near East.

This joint program is designed for early and mid-career professionals who wish to expand their knowledge of the Near East and their coexistence skill set in order to develop or enhance a career within governments, international agencies, non-government peace organizations or related fields.

Ordinarily, two years of full time residence are required at the normal course rate of seven or eight courses each academic year.
