Comprehensive Review of Pediatric Dentistry I II.

The course will provide information the link between the basic and clinical sciences concerned with the mechanisms of disease (e.g., inflammation, neoplasia, and immunopathology). While the emphasis will be on oral pathology, systemic diseases and their impact on overall health will also be discussed.

The University of Michigan Pediatric Dentistry Graduate Program is designed to prepare qualified dentists for specialized private practice, teaching, research, or service within a large hospital.

The 30-month course of study includes seminars, lectures, demonstrations, and intensive mentored clinical experience on physical and psychological growth and development, therapy for the primary and young permanent tooth, restoration of the primary and young permanent dentition, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic guidance of child behavior, trauma, and diagnosis and treatment of selected Class I and Class II malocclusions. Residents spend the first 12 months of the program in Ann Arbor engaged in coursework, patient care, and development of a research project. The final six months of the program are mainly spent in Ann Arbor engaged in completion of research, teaching of predoctoral dental students, and advanced clinical activities. This program provides mentored research experience throughout the program.

Multidisciplinary approach to treatment of complex pediatric dentistry problems.

Pediatric Dentistry will fully consider all complete applications and those otherwise complete except for INBDE. INBDE scores must be posted to PASS by January 11, 2023 for the candidate to be ranked by the program for Match.

During the 2022-23 and 2023-24 application cycles, only applicants with dental degrees from the U.S. or Canada will be considered for the 5 Match positions. Applicants with dental degrees from institutions outside of the U.S. or Canada will not be considered until the 2024-25 application cycle.

This program satisfies educational prerequisites for pediatric dentistry speciality licensure in the state of Michigan.

The practice of pediatric dentistry is varied and dynamic. The Case Western Reserve University program provides a full range of clinical experiences in pediatric dental care. The goal of the Doctor of Science in Dentistry program in the Pediatric Dentistry is to train specialists in pediatric dentistry who are not only competent in providing oral healthcare services to infants and children, including those with special needs, but who are also highly competent in the practice of scientific research and teaching as well.

The Doctor of Science in Dentistry program requires a total of three years in addition to the time commitment for the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Pediatric Dentistry and entails a research project, thesis, and thesis defense.

In the CAGS program, pediatric dentists receive intensive training to provide both primary and comprehensive preventive and therapeutic oral healthcare for infants and children through adolescence, including those with special healthcare needs, in the context of family, culture, and community.

Gain a strong scientific background and knowledge of pediatric dentistry through coursework and seminars. In particular, students will gain in-depth knowledge in basic sciences, clinical pediatric dentistry, bioethics, healthcare management, and research methodology, specifically epidemiology and biostatistics.

The Division of Pediatric Dentistry hosts a two-year program offering well-balanced didactic and clinical curriculum with ample learning opportunities aimed at successful completion of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry certification process.

Clinical and didactic teaching opportunities include teaching co-residents, dental students, allied health staff and medical trainees. In addition to earning a certificate in pediatric dentistry, our residents are required to prepare and successfully defend a master thesis and submit a publishable form to appropriate peer-reviewed journals. Research training, funds and time are incorporated in the curriculum. Elective rotations and continuing education opportunities are provided throughout the residency program.

Residents are assigned their own dental assistant for all care. The residency program also provides dental care opportunities for children with special health care needs in either the clinic settings or main operating room suites. Orthodontic treatment is provided under the guidance of orthodontists.

In addition to general VCU Graduate School graduation requirements, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. For research the student must have a thesis defense and present a poster by mid-April of their second year.

Semester course 40 clinical sessions. Teaches general anesthesia with special emphasis in pediatrics. Seminar Series: Pediatric Dentistry and Medicine.

Semester course 30 lecture seminar hours. Must be taken every semester of the program. Provides an arena for students to present seminars in either a clinical area or medical conditions of interest to pediatric dentists.

Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry.

Semester course 2 lecture hours. The course is the first of two didactic courses given to the dental student for pediatric dentistry.

Semester course 25 clinical sessions. May be repeated for credit. Must be taken every semester of the program. Provides teaching experience in diagnosis and treatment planning, restorative preparations and management of children behavior.

Semester course 30 lecture seminar hours. Must be taken every semester of the program. Reviews literature related to all aspects of the pediatric patient. Emphasizes the ability students to discuss the content of the articles and to critically evaluate it. Stresses the integration of new material with previously discussed literature and collateral material. Uses the reading list from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Semester course 16 lecture seminar hours. May be repeated for a total of four credits. Must be taken every semester of the program. Provides diagnosis and treatment planning of the child, adolescent and special patient. Follows up on records on completed cases, which also are presented and evaluated. Discusses the techniques employed and the justification of the treatment.

Semester course 16 lecture seminar hours. May be repeated for credit. Discusses articles from recent publications relating to all aspects of pediatric dentistry. Covers and critically reviews the Policies and Guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

Semester course 120 clinical sessions. Variable for 1-4 credits. Must be taking both fall and spring of the first and second years of the program for 4 credits each semester. May be taken in additional semesters as needed to complete clinical training credit will vary based on circumstances. Provides for the clinical management of pediatric dental patients. Provides experiences in the treatment of infants, preschool children, adolescent and special patients. Stresses pharmacological and non-pharmacological techniques and behavior management.

Senior Selective in Pediatric Dentistry.

Semester course 4 clinical hours per week. This is a clinical course that provides students with advanced experiences and techniques in pediatric dentistry.

Selective in Special Care Dentistry.

This includes a review of basic pediatric clinical procedures and introduction to the treatment of pediatric patients with special needs.

Clinical Pediatric Dentistry III.

Yearlong course 24 clinical hours.5 credit. Clinical rotation course designed to introduce the student to the basics of clinical pediatric dentistry and to prepare the student for PEDD 749. Students receive CO grading in the fall and a letter grade upon completion.

Clinical Pediatric Dentistry IV.

Semester course 48 clinical hours. Enrollment is restricted to students who have successfully completed all prior courses in pediatric dentistry and D4 class standing. This course is offered as a two-week clinical rotation during the senior year of the dental curriculum. Students will build upon and refine the skills developed during the D3 clinical experience. Pediatric dentistry is a unique experience because of the young patient population and psychological skills are centrally important to delivering patient care. The course has a strong emphasis on developing behavioral, communication and patient-management skills.
