The purpose of the prosthodontic residency program is to provide progressive clinical, laboratory and didactic training, closely supervised, at the post-graduate level in fixed, removable, maxillofacial and implant prosthodontics. The interrelation of other medical dental clinical specialties is also emphasized. The program integrates a research project in the biomedical sciences with a comprehensive clinical experience culminating in the award of a master of science in dentistry.

Our program is three years in length and is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Successful completion leads to specialty certification and qualifies the graduate for examination by the American Board of Prosthodontics. The in-house laboratory is capable of fabricating all fixed and removable prostheses required in the program.

The program accepts two residents per year and typically begins in each June. Students must be in the area and settled before that time. There is a summer orientation with prosthodontic-specific material before core courses start.

The department uses digital radiography, and all patient records are electronic.

The advanced dental specialty education program in prosthodontics offers the resident a comprehensive 36-month course of study in clinical and didactic prosthodontics. The program is designed to educate qualified individuals to pursue careers as practicing clinical dental specialists in prosthodontics. The program will train new generations of prosthodontists through the combination of conventional prosthodontics and advanced digital technology, enabling graduates to provide state-of-the-art prosthodontic care for patients requiring complex prosthodontic care.

The program will provide an optimal and well-rounded academic environment for prosthodontic training through excellence in didactics, research and clinical service. During the program residents will become well-versed in contemporary biomaterials and be able to appropriately evaluate and apply these biomaterials in patient care using evidence-based approaches. They will be trained in pre-prosthetic surgery as well as digital technology associated with dental implant placement and restorations.

Graduates will be life-long learners, competent in all aspects of prosthodontic treatments including fixed, removable, implant and maxillofacial prosthodontics. They will be proficient in applying contemporary clinical prosthodontics through a combination of conventional and advanced technology.

The program makes students educationally qualified to take the written portion of the American Board of Prosthodontics examination in the senior year. Residents are required to pass the written portion of the examination prior to graduation and are encouraged to continue and complete the board certification process.

As graduate students approach the end of their academic programs and the final semester of matriculation, they must make formal application to graduate. No degrees will be conferred until the application to graduate has been finalized.

Application to the prosthodontic concentration is through the ADEA PASS program. The PASS application should include the following items:.

Essay personal statement: Applicants should share personal history that led them to apply for an educational program in prosthodontics, including plans for the future and any factors important for reviewers to know. Please limit comments to one page.

Professional evaluation forms: Applicants can submit a minimum of two and a maximum of four PEFs per program.

Applicant may send any item of this type for consideration. The National Board scores are required, even if a graduate of a foreign school, with no exceptions.).

For students whose native language is not English: TOEFL (minimum score of 550-paper, 213-computer or 80-internet) or IELTS (minimum score of 6.5) scores (These scores are not required if the applicant went to dental school or graduate school in an English-speaking environment [USA, Canada, Australia or Great Britain, etc.].).

In addition to general VCU Graduate School graduation requirements, a cumulative GPA of 3.0 must be maintained. Students will take written and oral examinations and must obtain a minimum grade of B or a passing grade. If either is not obtained, then the examination must be retaken. For research the student must have a thesis defense, present a poster and prepare a manuscript for submission by May 1 of the third year. Extensions may be approved, but students are responsible for the expense.

Graduate Dental Clinic (four credits taken four times).

For DENS 660, students register for .5 credits for both fall and spring semesters in the first two years of the program. They receive a continuing grade in the fall semester and grade at the end of the spring semester for the entire year. Students take the class four times for .5 credits each time, but they are only graded for two 0.5 credit classes.

The minimum number of graduate credit hours required for this degree is 66.

Interdisciplinary Care Conference (no credit earned in fall continuing course) 1.

The School of Dentistry and the Restorative Dentistry offer a program of advanced study and clinical training leading to the degree of Master of Science. The program requires a minimum of thirty-four months (three academic years and two summers) of full-time residency in the School of Dentistry. It is designed to qualify dentists for careers in prosthodontic clinical practice, teaching, and research.

Advanced training in prosthodontics consists of an integrated education program designed to provide both knowledge in the dentally applied basic sciences and experiences in the clinical science of prosthodontics. These include but are not limited to, complete denture prosthodontics, removable partial denture prosthodontics, fixed partial denture prosthodontics, maxillofacial prosthetics, and surgical and prosthodontics dental implantology.

A series of structured didactic and clinical courses provides the student with a level of knowledge and skill development necessary to practice prosthodontics as a specialty and to prepare for a career in teaching and research.

The program qualifies the student for examination and certification by the American Board of Prosthodontics.

The Master of Science degree program requires the development of an in-depth research problem which must be reported in the form of a thesis.

Prosthodontics Prosthodontology is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association.

As a student in the Advanced Specialty Education Program in Prosthodontics at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, you will gain the knowledge and skills to diagnose, plan treatment, and provide comprehensive care for patients using an evidence-based, multidisciplinary approach.

Upon completion of the program, you will earn a Master of Science in Dentistry degree and a clinical certificate in prosthodontics, which will qualify you to take the American Board of Prosthodontics certifying exams.

The Master of Science in Dentistry (M.S.D.) degree and a clinical certificate are awarded upon completion of required didactic and clinical coursework, oral and written qualifying exams, and a research project culminating in a thesis or journal manuscript. This is a combined degree certificate program the school does not offer the option to earn only a clinical certificate.

The M.S.D. program starts the first week of July each year students may not enter the program in the spring semester. If you are an international student, you must arrive on campus at the end of May to complete the English for Academic Purposes placement test.

Hold a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an accredited U.S. or Canadian dental school. Graduates of international dental schools who have an equivalent educaqtional background and standing also are eligible to apply.

Have grades of B or better in dental school prosthodontics classes.

You will use the American Dental Education Association Postdoctoral Application Support Service (ADEA PASS) and the Postdoctoral Dental Matching Program (the Match) to apply for admission to the program.
