At any given time, there are up to a dozen Ph.D. dissertations underway in Russian, East European and Eurasian studies across the campus on topics as varied as anthropological studies of migration in Central Asia, the architectural history of Russian Constructivism, the art history of Soviet Conceptualism, and the history of the Second World War in Belarus, to name just a few.

Each year REEES awards a fellowship to an incoming graduate student working on the area in any department it is in addition to the fellowships that the departments themselves award.

Master’s Degree in Regional Studies—Russia, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia (REECA).

The REECA Master’s Program is a two-year program of multidisciplinary coursework and rigorous study of Russian and regional languages. Graduates of the program choose a variety of career paths upon completion of the degree some continue their studies in a Ph.D. program while other join the Foreign Service, pursue other government agency work, or return to the military. A significant number of REECA alumni enter the non-profit or business sector either in the United States or abroad.

We do not have our own Ph.D. degree program, but we offer several kinds of support for graduate students at the doctoral level.

The Harriman Institute administers the Master of Arts in Regional Studies—Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe (MARS-REERS) for those wishing to focus on a multidisciplinary approach to the study of contemporary Russia, Eurasia, and Eastern Europe (the former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans).

The program provides intensive exposure to the politics, international relations, modern history, and cultural and social formations of the region, with both a country-specific and trans-regional focus. Applicants should have some prior language training and must complete at least three years of an Eastern European or a Eurasian language.

The program is tailored to meet the needs of persons entering professional careers, mid-career professionals, students preparing for entry into doctoral programs, and those with a professional degree, such as the JD or MBA, who want to gain regional expertise.

MBA Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies.

Students take courses in a modern area language and have the opportunity to pursue their interests in such subjects as the ethnology or history of the region.

This course is required of all Full-Time students and is completed during the Autumn Quarter of their first year of residency in the program. The course also helps students create a personalized plan to guide their continued development at Booth and beyond.

The Master of Arts in Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies (MAERES) degree provides students with a solid grounding in the languages and cultures of the region and multidisciplinary depth in the social sciences. Students in the program will achieve:.

Language Skills: All applicants must include evidence that they have completed the equivalent of at least three years of college-level study of a language of the region relevant to their proposed course of study. Students may satisfy the CERES language requirement with an appropriate language of the region other than Russian. CERES places a strong emphasis on language proficiency and requires a portion of the degree credits to be taken in advanced language courses.

The M.A. degree curriculum is designed to take 4 semesters to complete. It requires:.

36 credit hours of course work, including two core courses (Introduction to Area Studies and the Capstone Seminar) and two advanced language courses .

Founded in 1991, the Center for Slavic, Eurasian, and East European Studies (CSEEES) is one of the oldest area studies centers at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

The MA degree combines learning of Slavic East European languages (BCS, Czech, Polish, Russian, Turkish, Ukrainian) with courses that explore the histories, politics, and cultures of the region.

Integrated within the interdisciplinary BA track in Central European Studies, the program supports the study of the V4 countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia) at Carolina.

The department offers an interdisciplinary M.A. in Russian and Slavic studies, a program that allows students to take Russia-related courses in departments across NYU. In addition to the departmental curriculum particular strengths in literature and film, the course of study can encompass a wide variety of specializations, from history and anthropology to politics, music, linguistics, and performance studies. With its focus on interdisciplinarity and comparative methodologies, the program can serve as excellent preparation for graduate study at the Ph.D. level. It also provides a thorough grounding in the Russia field for terminal M.A. students who choose to pursue a career in this area.

The M.A. degree requires successful completion of eight courses (32 points) and a thesis. Before being granted the M.A., students must attain the level of advanced in all language skills (speaking, oral comprehension, reading, and writing), to be demonstrated by either passing an examination or earning the equivalent of an A grade in auditing the department third-year Russian course.

Dual Degrees in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies and Global Policy Studies.

In conjunction with the Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, students may pursue a dual degree program leading to the MGPS and Master of Arts in Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies. The program combines advanced studies of globalization with a focus on the politics, economy and cultures of the former Soviet Union and Eastern European, responding to an increased need in both the public and private sectors for specialists with that combination of backgrounds. Graduates should possess substantial career flexibility and attractiveness to prospective employers in government, private industry and the nonprofit sector.

The program is structured so that students can earn both master degrees simultaneously in approximately three academic years. Degrees are awarded when the required coursework in both areas is completed.
